About

I'm Mike O'Brien. I've spent most of my life attempting to master the health equation, and I continue to arrive at a better and more complete understanding all the time. Mastering health is a complex endeavor, as there are so many different types of variables, and they all interact. You need to look at the whole picture and integrate knowledge from a huge variety of sources, which even most experts fail to do. People tend to be wrapped up in a particular philosophy, and so they don't remain open to the vast quantity of information that is available. Why? Because it's extremely challenging. So how do you figure it out? It takes a lifelong dedicated search to sort it all out and integrate something that makes sense. As a scientist, engineer, and researcher for the latter half of my life, my mission is to encapsulate all of this in a way that will benefit as many people as possible, and causing the most profound overall impact that I can achieve. It's not about money for me. It's about community and our combined joy, creativity, enthusiasm, productivity, and ability to work together to manifest the positive change that this world desperately needs in order to be a good place for our children and their children.

Modern medicine fails to help us to maintain our health. It does not fix or address the root causes of the common diseases: heart disease diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, depression, anxiety, poor memory and concentration, low energy, weight issues etc. It fails to recognize the inflammatory conditions at the heart of these issues. It knows very little about nutrition or even how to exercise properly. This is great for the pharmaceutical industry which is extremely large and powerful.

The US Government fails to serve the people, but instead is controlled by the the interests of the largest food and drug companies. For example, because of industry pressure, the USDA Food Pyramid recommends a diet that benefits the largest producers of food (hint: meat dairy and grain industries) at great expense to our health.

The modern education system also fails us when it comes to health and happiness. It fails to address many important issues, like teaching us about real health (just look at what's happening to our youth). It fails to teach us how to think or be inspired or live a life of meaning and purpose, instead causing us to focus on short term memorization, sitting still for long periods, and doing as we are told (if only our teachers were more enlightened).

I started down the path to health because, at age 43, I was 20 pounds overweight, depressed and anxious at the same time, and I had allergy problems; plus, I had horrible back pain that was so bad that it greatly interfered with my work, my sleep, my recreation and my family life. I tried all kinds of solutions that didn't work until 1. I discovered yoga and 2. I figured out how to eat properly and 3. I discovered the key elements of knowledge that lead to happiness (some of these concepts are intertwined with what some consider to be spirituality).

In order to be happy, how you think is more important than anything else you do, including what you eat, how much you exercise, and how much money you make. Truly and profoundly, the brain is the master control system of the body and the ultimate organ that we must tend to. Indeed, even our ability to perceive what is happening is directly tied to a well functioning brain that is balanced, whole, and complete.

Nutrition does definitely and strongly tie into brain function. The epidemic of ADD, ADHD, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's Disease, and age-related decline does relate strongly to our diet (although not completely). I help people understand and address the root causes behind all of these problems, thereby increasing energy, happiness and productivity in profound ways. Herbalism and correct supplementation also play profoundly into nutrition. I've applied Ayurvedic Medicine to my approach to health care. The sister science to Yoga for over 5000 years, Ayurveda is the world's oldest documented health care system, and it appropriately focuses on the role of food, eating habits, the digestive system, and our mental processes.

The brain also benefits greatly from Yoga. Yoga is not just a great exercise that encourages good strength, alignment and posture. thereby reducing stress. Yoga simultaneously is a form of meditation that encourages a clear and wide awake mind; plus, it teaches us about our breath, encouraging us to breathe properly all the time, and thereby increasing our abilities to tackle any challenge or endeavor, and, combined with improving our balance and coordination, become way better at any sport or activity. Yoga, quite simply, helps us to become more balanced, aware, whole, complete, and disciplined yet playful in our attitude towards life.

I passionately desire to help others achieve the same level of health and happiness that I've discovered. Life is all about helping others in the most profound way we can, developing and using our skills in the best way we can, living to our fullest potential, and in this process helping to build a better and more enlightened society. Perhaps we can even save the planet by spreading knowledge, wisdom, peace, love, and focusing on the issues that matter.
